Discover Your Calling

“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.” ~Frederick Buechner

In 1999, my mom was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. Her doctor said she needed harsh chemotherapy and radiation, which would make her extremely ill for a year; otherwise, she had no chance of survival and would die within six months. We lived 3,000 miles apart, with no internet or cell phones, but we spoke daily. I researched alternative therapies and sent her materials, which we discussed together. She chose to change her diet instead of undergoing chemotherapy. She enjoyed three good years before the cancer returned, and six weeks later, she was gone. Though she wasn’t cured, I supported her decision, and looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing, knowing she was at peace.

Since then, I’ve supported family and friends, particularly seniors, in navigating their healthcare. As a health advocate, I empower others to make informed decisions about their care. I am especially passionate about supporting the elderly, ensuring they are seen, heard, and able to make choices that improve their quality of life.

To truly understand your calling, pay attention to what naturally draws your interest and passion.

From my experience, there are a few hints that you can use to identify your calling: passion, growth, identity and faith. Passion is something that you are drawn to and you could do all day long. Growth requires embracing change that is required to implement your calling. Identity is often recognized by others first, as they see your strengths and what you’re truly meant to do.  Finally, faith means stepping into the unknown to truly discover your calling.
